April 4 First Friday Art Walk Sequim Color Theme is PINK! Spring flaunts hope and high spirits with the return of bright flowers and fluttering feathered friends as April’s First Friday Art Walk Sequim bursts with PINK as the theme color that represents congenial care, productive promises, encouragement, sweet delight, supportive strength, and kind, comforting assurance. You will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in all spring shades of pink from strong burgundy to soft blush for the evening out on the town. Support and encourage young artists while playing our matching game BirdFest-BirdQuest! You might see some pink flamingos too!

First Friday Art Walk Sequim is a fun and free self-guided tour of local art venues in Sequim on the First Friday of every month from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Initiated in 2006, the First Friday Art Walk Sequim is an encouraging and educational arts event that is sponsored and produced by Renne Emiko Brock. It’s time for BirdFest BirdQuest! You can play BirdFest-BirdQuest which runs through April and is sponsored by Sequim-Dungeness Chamber of Commerce Merchants’ Group. During the First Friday Art Walk, you can find these fine art feathered friends at several locations. BirdFest-BirdQuest: a fun free game for everyone that brings together high school students, merchants and the community to support the Olympic Bird Festival and encourages shopping local. Find and match the ceramic bird sculptures created by Sequim High School ceramics students to the business where they are hidden.

Game cards are available at all participating locations beginning on April 1, including the Sequim Visitor Information Center. Match a minimum of 15 sculptures with their locations on the game card, then enter to win the Grand Prize Basket, including treats for bird watchers, Sequim swag, and a one-year membership to the Audubon Society. You also get to vote on your favorite bird! You tell us (by circling the name of the sculpture) – and the top three vote-getters receive a cash prize! Forage Gifts & Northwest Treasures at 121 W Washington St. is showcasing joyfully, talented artist Sarah Necco of Barnhouse Studio. She is an artist and photographer local to Olympic Peninsula. She has been creating art her whole life and enjoys working in a variety of mediums, as well as photography and making jewelry. Most of her work is inspired by the love for flowers, nature, and landscapes.

From 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County’s Sequim Habitat Boutique Store at 213 E Washington St. has fabulous live music with Black Diamond Junction!

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. presents “Styles” with Jeannine Chappell and Jolene Sanborn. Jeannine likes experimenting with different styles of painting. Her April display will showcase abstract and semi-abstract pieces created using the gel plate, a flexible monoprinting device that she finds to be a valuable addition to her artmaking toolkit. “I especially like the gel plate because of the spontaneity it provides: the paint is rolled onto the plate with a brayer, a sheet of paper is placed on top, and as that is pulled off the result is always a surprise,” states Chappell. She may add more “pulls” from the plate or continue with collage, drawing, or more traditional painting to reach the final piece.

Jolene is a traditional watercolorist. Her paintings are done in a representational style, often depicting experiences from her life. “For me, watercolor is about lifetime learning,” states Sanborn. “I can have an idea and a direction for a painting ready to go, but then the weather changes, the humidity goes up or down and the paint and paper decide they are in control of the day, not me!” For Jolene, every painting is a challenge and a learning experience.

At the Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N. Sequim Avenue the featured artist in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Art Gallery is Wildlife Photographer Dick Hancock and multiple medium artist Gloria Hancock. Since 1986, Dick has worked as a professional wildlife photographer. He is the only person in twenty years to photograph a wolf in the wild in Washington State, as documented by the Tacoma News Tribune. His photographs have been published by outdoor and travel magazines, such as Field and Stream; Bugle Magazine, the quarterly journal of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; Alaska Airlines Magazine; Bow hunter Magazine; Chase Magazine; Boone and Crockett’s quarterly magazine; and the Right of way Vistas. Dick’s work has also been featured in calendars, brochures, books and book covers. Some organizations featuring his works include the US Forest Service; Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest; US department of the Interior; Washington Dept. of Fish and Game; Colorado Dept. of Fish and Wildlife; Idaho Dept. of Wildlife; Boise Cascade; and Weyerhaeuser Corp.

Gloria shares, “I am a local artist in Sequim. I enjoy working in a variety of mediums. Pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oils…all depending on my mood. I have painted windows for local stores for many years. Also, painting commissions of people and of animals brings me great joy. Through the decades I have had beautiful models..my grandchildren and husband. The paintings have become heirlooms. The beauty of the Olympic Peninsula keeps me inspired. Many paintings of the ocean – forests – it is never-ending!”

The A. Milligan Art Studio & Gallery at 520 N. Sequim Ave. presents “The Pacific Northwest Impressions Exhibit” features a duet of artists, Michelle Lindblom and Linda Tilley, whose works showcase two distinct methods of artistic expression describing the poetic beauty of the pacific northwest. Michelle Lindblom’s acrylic paintings and monotypes take you on an abstract and ethereal journey through her mesmerizing interpretations of the world that surrounds us. She holds advanced degrees in the fine arts and taught visual arts at the college level for over twenty-four years. Now residing in Sequim from Bend, OR, she’s served on community arts committees, and as a gallery coordinator and exhibition juror. Her artwork has been exhibited across the United States and in Europe. Michelle says, “My approach to making marks is intuitive. Once the process begins, it becomes a visual playground of colors, textures, shapes and movement. As the work evolves, intuition and formal knowledge guide the exploration, experimentation and discovery. My imagery portrays the continuous dialogues with my psyche, along with my awareness of the nuances of everyday experiences.”

Linda Tilley’s representational works are an immersion into the serene beauty of the endless scenic landscapes around us. Painting primarily in oil, Linda says she is drawn to paint “en plein air”, inspired by the intensity of color, light, atmosphere and the energies of the world outside. She also uses the time she spends in nature to inform the works she creates when painting inside her studio. She’s traveled regionally and to Europe following her passion for plein air painting, continually learning and honing her skills to capture the experiences that she shares on her canvases. Over the years, this award-winning artist has had her work juried into multiple regional shows and exhibitions; and her paintings are hung in private collections across the United States.

As always, while you’re visiting the main gallery, take a peek around the corner into Anne’s pastel studio for any works that might be in progress; and see some of her finished pieces on display in the digital studio.

From 5:00 to 7:00 PM, the City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission hosts in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery the “High Schools of the Olympic Peninsula Arts Exhibition” and mini-exhibition of Trashion Fashions in the Sequim Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar Street.

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. features live music with artworks by Peninsula Art Friends. While at Wind Rose, enjoy award winning artfully crafted wines and appetizing tidbits.

From 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Rainshadow Café at 157 West Cedar Street has live music with Dawn & Steve. Come sing your favorite songs with a full menu and drinks to enjoy. Some dancing is encouraged too.

The River House Bakery & Cafe at 120 W. Bell Street hosts we will be serving a limited dinner menu from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and music with Sarah Shea- Reservations are strongly encouraged. Their featured artist is June Echternkamp of oil on framed canvas paintings and stained glass.

Pacific Mist Books at 122 West Washington Street shares the love of reading and offers an eclectic mix of new and vintage books, cards, and gifts including local authors and artists.

La Petite Maison Blanche at 213 E Washington St. features By the Sea created by Larry & Linda Gonzales of hand carved wood. When they moved to Washington, Larry took up relief carving, and Linda helped design the piece and color it. They create their carvings from nature found in the marine world of the Olympic Peninsula. Their pieces capture moments in time in a way that brings an infusion of the Strait of Juan de Fuca into the home. They share, “We work together to interpret the scenes wanting to embody the wood slabs. It’s an intuitive process with a scene oftentimes changing throughout the process. Each sculpture is designed out of one piece of wood and is one of a kind. We prefer local woods that grow here in the Pacific Northwest such as: red and yellow cedar, birch, maple, alder and madrone. Frequently found on a daily beach walk, we leave ourselves open for inspiration to strike from the natural world.” La Petite Maison Blanche has uniquely curated gifts and festive treats throughout the shop to keep you in the pink.

Sequim Spice and Tea at 139 W Washington St. has unique art including glass, pottery, illustration, and photography of local artists. You can also find artful, creative tea blends, colorful and fun teapots and cups, and cheerful culinary gifts.

Over the Fence, a destination home and garden store, at 118 E. Washington St. is hosting one of their local makers.

Locally created gifts don Cedarbrook Lavender Gift Shop at 120 W Washington Street has delightful farm fresh lavender creations, treats, and inspired vintage décor items.

Soup in the Alley at 138 W Washington features a rotation of local artists, live music, and treats.

New Venue on the Sequim Art Walk! Olympic Peninsula YMCA at 610 N. Fifth Ave. is launching their new Art Gallery in the YMCA of Sequim! Artworks from paintings, photographs and 3-dimensional art-forms were submitted by a variety of Y staff and members that are now on display! The gallery is open during the First Friday Art Walk Sequim hours of 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Please take the time to visit this new venue and support our community members! With several artists’ works on display, here are a few bios of these creative folks: Luke Kisena shares, “I draw inspiration from so many separate places. First, all the hardships and joys I have experienced in life. Art is like therapy; I tend to be most creative when working through things or during hardships. It also works with happiness and joy, but I tend to really push myself when dealing with the hardships or unfair things we all must endure to achieve personal success. Growing up as a graffiti artist, I have always been inspired by graffiti, street art and street artists. I have an appreciation for all the arts, but graffiti in the 80s was so influential to me and molded me into the artist I am today. Hip Hop/Rap has a lot to do with my inspiration. On a different note, a lot of inspiration is drawn from my family, friends, and students.”

Rebecca Murphy is a largely self-taught painter with special interests in gouache and oil. She paints outdoors and in her studio from photos she takes throughout the Olympic Peninsula. Rebecca and her husband moved to Sequim in 2020 from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2023 she won Best in Division/Amateur Watercolor at the Clallam County Fair for her gouache painting of Neah Bay. She has particularly enjoyed meeting and painting with fellow artists here in Sequim.

Mike McCollum taught Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 25 years, ending his academic career as Dean at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.  He holds two masters degrees in Art from UC Berkeley. In 1980, he was awarded a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.  He has participated in hundreds of exhibits, one-person, group and invitational, domestically and abroad. He currently works primarily in drawing wood and resin in both 2-d and 3-d.

Susan Drake states, “I love to be creative in my life and have been surrounded by people that are the same. My background in art would have started at Harbor High school in Santa Cruz, CA, where my art teachers believed in me and I had my first show in acrylic and ceramic sculpture. I was lucky enough to mentor under great teachers in Hawaii selling on the fence by the zoo in Waikiki, Oahu and several shops including the banyan tree market. I was accepted to the Reed College Art Museum school downtown Portland, OR. where I studied Art history. I would like to share my new movement created by the masters Maxfield Parrish, Bruce Cowden, Franswai Bochare, and my classes at The University of Hawaii at Manoa in oriental paint brushing technique with bamboo brush. My style movement is called Parallelism, a wonderful positive approach to our world currently.”

Roger Ulm is retired from Boeing and moved to Sequim10 years ago. Love the outdoors, water features, bike riding, and building birch tree art combined with lights. Enjoy spending time with friends and family.

Sequim Art Walk Special Event with a return to Pondicherri at 121 E. Washington St. with watercolor artist Kathy Nichols. Kathy is known for her beautiful and delicate paintings and gift cards. Her work often features soft dreamy landscapes, birds, whales, and other things you would see admiring the natural beauty of the Olympic Peninsula. This time she will demonstrate how to do a lovely pink rose cluster – Celebrate Spring. You are also invited to participate and create one of your own! The color aqua expresses responsible, sustainable elements of cool fresh water, abundant salty seas, renewing rain, and bright sunny skies. Art and music inspired by our natural resources, creativity, positive partnerships, and revolutionary ideas are included in the May Art Walk.

At the Sequim Museum & Arts, 544 N. Sequim Avenue in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Art Gallery, please visit Barb Falk’s exhibition “The Art of Tranquility”. Barb’s mixed media paintings are a delicate balance of warm and cool tones that bring calmness, peacefulness, and joy. She has a strong connection with the great outdoors being raised in a small rural area and a deep love of nature. Her 36 years of mixing painting medium and techniques reveal the contour, color, and composition flexibility and best features each medium has to offer.

The A. Milligan Art Studio & Gallery at 520 N. Sequim Ave features the Peninsula Fiber Artists “Small Treasures”. Wearable art, hand-felted pieces, art quilts and small sculptures by artists from around the area are among the 44 pieces of textile art that will be on exhibit in the Main Gallery. The “Small Treasures” show includes unique works by 15 members of the Peninsula Fiber Artists group. Participating artists are Lora Armstrong, Linda Carlson, Liisa Fagerlund and Marla Varner from Sequim; Evette Allerdings and Barbara Houshmand from Port Angeles; Larkin Van Horn from Port Hadlock; Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, Pat Herkal, Kindy Kemp, Cynthia LeRouge, Debra E. Olson, Susan Sawatzky and Cathie Wier from Port Townsend; and Lori Goddard from Port Ludlow.

Come join us for some tasty bites and refreshments and take in this delightful show while visiting with friends and meet the artists who are happy to discuss their pieces with you. Also take a look into Anne Milligan’s Pastel Studio for a peek at her works in progress and see her finished pieces on display in the Digital Studio. The A. Milligan Art Gallery is located between the Olympic Theatre Arts Center and the Sequim Museum and Arts across from the Sequim High School.

Forage Gifts & Northwest Treasures at 121 W Washington Street features an Evening with Gianna Andrews. Gianna’s art is inspired by her love for the natural world. When she isn’t out exploring nature, she is painting in her studio nestled between the mountains and the sea on the Olympic Peninsula. She shares, “Though my love of nature has been there since day one, I didn’t find art until I sustained a mountain biking accident resulting in a broken back. Confined to a hard plastic back brace for months, I spent my recovery at the easel, painting my favorite nature scenes instead of exploring them. Since then, painting has not only evolved into my biggest passion, but a thriving art career. By sharing my art and story with the world, I hope to inspire others to reach for their dreams while protecting the planet we call home.”

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. features the “Blossoming Futures: A Garden of Possibilities” exhibition with Molly White and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula fundraising effort. What do kids and art have in common? Both need to be nurtured to grow.  With loving guidance, determination and patience, wonderful people and art emerge. Molly White is excited to be partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs. “As a retired teacher of young children, I love sharing the windows with The Boys & Girls Clubs,” states White, “Children are our future and I love and have always loved helping them grow into thoughtful, kind, problem solving adults. Art was always a big part of my instruction as well!” Molly still nurtures everything around her. Her animals, garden and grandson are now her benefactors. Her love of art and her subject matter comes through in the colorful whimsy and spirit seen in her paintings. She is a master in pastels, acrylics or oil.

The artists at Blue Whole Gallery will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of selected works to the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout May. The Boys & Girls Clubs provide essential services to children 18 and under. While in a safe and nurturing environment, the Clubs offer various programs during the summer that focus on child development as well as academic enrichment keeping kids on track for the next school year. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula is a great partner and mentor for our community’s children. Join the artists of Blue Whole Gallery in supporting their efforts during the month of May.

Pacific Mist Books at 122 West Washington Street hosts a book signing with local author Mary Oquendo, an education coach at Pawsitive Educational Training, and author of the sweet book, “A Spirited Life” which will be featured during the Sequim Art Walk. “A Spirited Life” chronicles the life of Spirit, Mary’s indomitable husky, as he navigates early health issues and becomes an instant sensation wherever he goes. 

Wild Goddess Brews-n-Bites at 145 E Washington Street Suite D has small bites, salads, dips, and boards. Have a comfy seat and enjoy a wide selection of beverages along with delightful live music.

They will be there to speak on the glazes and clay they have created to give that Pacific Northwest feel. Pacific Mist – Books, Cards & Gifts at 122 West Washington Street hosts Elle Payne and her book, “Stories, Musings, and Advice from a Funeral Director”. As a funeral director by day and ballet teacher by night, Elle brings humor, compassion, and sound advice from her experiences in a career path often shrouded in mystery.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. has “May Flowers” exhibit that features Mary Franchini, an Acrylic and Mixed Media Painter, and Jane Smith, a 3-D Multi Media Artist.  Mary shares, “Over my years of painting I have enjoyed abstracting all manner of things and making non-objective pieces. But sometimes I need to get back to my roots and take a stab at flowers that look real. I cannot help but throw in some abstracted elements or out-of-norm color. Most of the time now I use acrylic paint but like to use other media along with acrylic. Pastel, color pencil, and other mark making tools along with different colors to make paintings a bit more interesting. I love to try and bring the effect of light on an object—it does not always work but I do try.”

Jane states, “My mother was an oil painter, and as a child, I wanted to be an artist. Growing up in Hawaii my first art was creating mosaics from found beach glass. I would embellish school reports with colorful yarn or pictures in elementary school and would often use different colored pencils or pens to make my work stand out. My first adult artistic creativity was when I discovered cake decorating. 50 years later I still find myself creating with frosting and even using cake decorating supplies to add dimension to my art. My next calling was acrylic painting and I have enjoyed that medium for over 30 years and especially love painting on “repurposed” items like furniture and silver teapots. I then branched out into painting on gourds. Living in Arizona, gourds, and classes were plentiful, and I soon developed a passion for carving, burning and cutting, and doing all forms of gourd art. My art often includes embellishments. Beads, feathers, pine needles, and other found items are often incorporated into my pieces.  A business trip to Djibouti inspired my desire to create African-themed art along with my childhood Hawaiian influences. My grandmother awakened my love for gardening and the colors occurring in nature, which are responsible for my color combinations and my floral themes. My May window at the Blue Whole gallery will display a variety of my artistic creations.”

Strait Turners, an AAW (American Association of Woodturners) chapter wood lathe club here on the Olympic Peninsula will be showing members work in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Art Gallery at the Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N Sequim Ave. “Round and Brown (& Beyond)” will be a display of a variety of club member turnings, many of which will be available for purchase. All of the items are hand crafted and turned from local woods, regional woods, exotic imported woods and other additional materials. The club meets once a month at the Gardiner Community Center on the third Saturday at noon. Meetings include educational speakers, wood and tool sales, social time, a library, and hands on demos.

Peninsula ART Friends (PAF) has their artwork on display at Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. while enjoying award winning artfully crafted wines and appetizing tidbits. Participating artists are Beverly Beighle, Melissa Doyel, Connie Drysdale, Cecilia Olivera-Hillway, Roger Huntley, Sarah Hurt, Allyne Lawson, Jerri Moore, and Shirley Rudolf.

From 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County’s Sequim Habitat Boutique Store at 154 W. Washington St. has fabulous live music with OC!

From 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Rainshadow Café at 157 West Cedar Street has live music with Dawn & Steve. Come sing your favorite songs with a full menu and drinks to enjoy. Some dancing is encouraged too.

The color aqua expresses responsible, sustainable elements of cool fresh water, abundant salty seas, renewing rain, and bright sunny skies. Art and music inspired by our natural resources, creativity, positive partnerships, and revolutionary ideas are included in the May First Friday Art Walk Sequim. From our inventive cultivating irrigation ditches that make our valley abundant to our future forward-thinking ideas are highlighted at the Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. Besides wearing the color theme of Aqua, everyone is encouraged to dress up in amusing and whimsical outfits for the Irrigation Festival’s “Callen Crazy Days”!

Friday’s Entertainment Schedule includes Crazy Daze Community Skits from 6:00 – 7:00 PM and Sara Shea and Group from 7:00 – 8:00 PM on our performance stage. DR Callen, nicknamed Crazy Callen, was the designer of the first irrigation ditches in Sequim that took water from the Dungeness River to the Sequim Valley. Each year we honor this amazing pioneer with a breakfast – “Crazy Daze Breakfast”. No tickets are required. We welcome the whole family to join us for Crazy Daze “Breakfast for Dinner”, where we will have live entertainment, seating and tables for people to enjoy their meals and be entertained with fun skits and music.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. features the exhibition “Create from Nature’s Order” featured artists are Dan Brewer a fractal artist and Dennis (Doc) Pangborn a two-dimension painter. Dan Brewer started messing around with computers in 1970.  When he stumbled upon fractals he began to explore how they are made. The early personal computers (PCs) took a painfully long time to process and render their images. A single change could take nine hours. However, as processing chips got faster and the fascinating fractal world continued to draw him back, his interest in building computers grew. Seven PCs later, newer monster computers had whittled that nine hours per change down to less than five minutes. Dan’s fractal work remains true to the generating equations. It has no layering or partial editing of color. Nor is it redrawn, touched up, or painted in or out of the computer. For Dan, fractals are templates for the imagination to play on.

Dennis (Doc) Pangborn shares, “Having been here a few years now, I continue to be amazed at all the possibilities for compositions. I have a growing fascination with clouds and skies and how best to capture them on canvas. I enjoy experimenting with various painting processes to get the results I’m looking for in my compositions. Palette knives, paint rollers, sponges, and brushes can all play a part when I paint.”

The Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N Sequim Avenue features Keith Ross, of Keith’s Frame of Mind located in Sequim WA, is widely known and respected for his wildlife photography, and for his event and portrait photography as the official photographer for the Sequim Irrigation Festival season in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Gallery. This exhibit is called “Heavy on Herons”, featuring a full gallery of framed Great Blue Heron images, along with a laser projector slide show of 283 heron images on a 10 foot big screen the museum. Keithalso captures live events like ballet and concerts, using his mastery behind the camera. His images and the story of the rescue of a pair of bald eaglets were published in Scholastic Magazine, and distributed nationally to all the schools in the country. He is also the creator and administrator of the Sequim Outdoors Facebook group, created to allow our local artists and photographers to post their work on a safe platform.

Most of my work is inspired by my love for flowers, nature, and landscapes. When not working on a creative project, I can be found in the garden, on a hike, or spending quality time with my family and pets!”

New Sequim Art Walk Venue! Design2Scan3D at 207 W Spruce St. which features Sequim featuring 3D printing, 3D scanning, and ceramics classes. Mayor Smith agreed to let them scan him and make him into a ceramic figurine atop an olla that they made together in the studio. Design2Scan3D plan to present this olla to the mayor and the City of Sequim in their studio to celebrate the Sequim Art Walk and the Irrigation Festival.

Pondicherri at 119 E Washington St. is hosting artist Monica Gutierrez Quarto. Her artwork ranges from paintings and monotypes to woodcuts. Nature is an obvious theme in her pieces with magic and whimsy mixed in. Monica hosts local workshops in Sequim and Port Angeles. Art Walk guests will receive special pricing on her upcoming workshops just in time for Mother’s Day! Sign up during Art Walk required. Monica states of her work, “Nature plays an integral role in all of my artwork, as does the interaction between human beings and wildlife. I’m attempting through art to help revive the soul and change the hearts of the people who have lost the balance with nature and have become numbed to its essential elements.”

The Sequim Museum & Arts at 175 W Cedar St. will host “Discoveries and Abstractions” with photographer Jerry Fagerlund and fiber artist Liisa Fagerlund. The photographs and collages represented in this exhibition reflect the wide range of environments Jerry and Liisa have experienced in their years together. Travel interests and career advancement gave them the opportunity to live and work in a number of different and fascinating places including Nigeria, Utah canyon country, France, New York, and the Pacific Northwest. Liisa is inspired by the natural world including the wonderful colors and patterns of landscape and the human environment. She began focusing on art after retirement to Sequim, taking classes in drawing and painting, employing sewing skills in creative ways to make art quilts, fabric collages, and wearable art. She benefits from the vision of her husband and his photography, learning to look and really see the world around her. Many of her collages are inspired by photographs he has taken.

“Art in an Aqua Tone” exhibition at the Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. features artists Carol Janda and Stacey Martin-Lopez. Carol Janda is known for her two and three dimension artwork. She will showcase her paintings including refreshing waterscapes and stoneware pottery with a touch of nature. Stacey Martin-Lopez will exhibit paintings, revealing her long-standing expertise in gouache. Her selection of pieces for the window also includes an aqua tone. Carol and Stacey, two veteran artists, are eager to talk about their art with art supporters of the community.  Stacey states, I prefer working with graphite and the vibrant colors of gouache as well as printmaking.” To learn even more, Carol Janda will offer Art Talk on Saturday, May 4, 1:00 to 3:00 in the gallery about her thoughts, techniques, ideology, and developing abstract images and the various types of abstract expressionism.

If you have never heard a sax quartet, you owe it to yourself to check out the Saxologists in their upcoming performance at Olympic Theater Arts Gathering Hall starting at 5:30 PM at 414 N Sequim Avenue. The Sequim City Band Saxologists are a saxophone ensemble composed of members of the Sequim City Band. Current instrumentation includes a quartet of saxes – soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. The sound is both warm and edgy and the range of music covers everything from classical to pop, ragtime to smooth jazz. Each instrument has an opportunity to shine in solo melodic lines as well as blending into the overall sound of the quartet with full, rich ensemble moments. The Saxologists are community ambassadors for Sequim City Band. Performing in venues more intimate than those that can accommodate the entire band, they introduce young and old to the joy of live musical performance. First Friday at OTA is always free to the public, where the snack and beverage bar will be open.

The Peninsula Taproom at 210 W. Washington St., Suite 4 offers up springtime brews and hand-crafted spirits at Evil Roy’s Elixirs Distillery at 209 S Sequim Ave. during the Sequim Art Walk.

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. hosts artist Carolyn Votaw and live music with “Hannah and Christian”. “Far Shores: New works by Carolyn Votaw” is an exhibition of monotype impressions of natural treasures collected from the far shores of the Olympic Peninsula and also features a selection of miniature linocut prints inspired by the Pacific Northwest through May. “Hannah and Christian” are a wife and husband duo with a mixture of songs from the 70-90s. Partner live music, art, and award winning artfully crafted wines and appetizing tidbits at Wind Rose.

The Irrigation Festival Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair launches the First Friday Art Walk Sequim Patron Preview at the Sequim Civic Center Plaza at 152 West Cedar Street. 2018 will be the 28th year for the Arts and Crafts Fair that provides an opportunity for vendors to sell their handcrafted wares. Come participate in the Community Creativity Activity to color small parts of the 2018 Irrigation Festival logo to make a giant logo mural that will be on display at Coastal. Bring your DIY reuse, recycle, repurpose creations to win prizes on Friday night or Saturday morning! Enter to win in the People’s Choice Awards in our 4 categories: Wearable, Functional, Decorative, and Kids 15 and under.

Throughout the town, artwork created by our local students for the 2018 Irrigation Festival Button Contest will be on display at several Sequim Merchants.

 

In anticipation of World Accordion Day, Olympic Theatre Arts welcomes Ken Lillagore’s “Accordion My Way” performance beginning at 5:30 PM located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Ken is quick to dispel the accordion’s cliché image. “When you hear ‘accordion’, the first thing that comes to mind is polka or Lawrence Welk,” Ken says. “I don’t play that music. I play the music I enjoy, like show tunes, ballads and standards.” First Friday at Olympic Theatre Arts is always free to the public where the snack and beverage bar will be open.

 

Rainshadow Café at 157 W Cedar St. is hosting live music with Bread and Gravy from 6 to 8 PM. They will have their full menu available and some small plates paired perfectly with local wine and beer such as Camaraderie, Harbinger, and Finn River, and Port Townsend Brewery.

 

The Museum and Arts Center features the “A Story to Tell II – Local Sights in Watercolor” by Shirley Mercer exhibition at 175 W. Cedar St. This is the second installment of Shirley’s “A Story to Tell” Series and new paintings of the Olympic Peninsula local vistas. There will be a demonstration with the artist on May 5 at 1:00 PM called “Photo to Finished Painting.”

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. features “Shadows of the past” with digital artist Marilynn Evans. Marilynn creates emotional reality from her original photographs brushed with refined technical skills. A tapestry of beautifully composed images will lead the viewer to the shadow of the past. The gallery will also present a silent auction window by the member artists in support of the scholarship for Sequim High School students.

 

Forage Gifts & Northwest Treasures at 121 W Washington Street features amazing blown glass art by Megan of Molten Mama Hot Shop.

Devoting his time to playing and singing classic songs from the Great American Songbook, Burke Garrett will start at 5:30 at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. “I cover the popular songs from the early to mid-20th century,” Garrett says about his one-man show. “I talk about composers, lyricists and the history relating to song writing in the 20th century.”  Free to the public.

Music starts at 6 p.m. at the Sequim Civic Center with ‘Propagation’ by Alan B. Brock-Richmond an experimental improvisational ambient drone noise concert developed to premiere in celebration of the 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival. Inspired by early sound pioneers, Futurist ideals and aesthetics such as The Art of Noises manifesto and Intonarumori instruments of Luigi Russolo, and novelty music boxes of the Victorian Era, this work is an exploration of mechanical and electronic sound looping with emphasis on modulating tones, complex complimentary and contrasting harmonics, nuanced resonances, and textured reverberation, centered around a sculptural chambered music box instrument with original composition, electric guitar with bows, effects, and loop pedals, and field recordings including local irrigation canals and agricultural machinery. audioeins.com

Returning Venue for the Art Walk! Bell Street Bakery is back at 175 W Bell St. and will be showcasing artist Linda Silvas and Dotti Holland.

Jake Reichner will play from 5:30-7:30 p.m.at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Reichner grew up in Sequim and has been playing guitar and writing his own music since high school. According to Reichner, his work is inspired by everyday life. It is reflective and introspective and blends both rhythmic and percussive songs with melodic ballads. Free to the public.
