April 7 Art Walk Color Theme is PINK! Spring blooms with bright flowers and hopeful spirits as April’s First Friday Art Walk Sequim bursts with PINK as the theme color that represents supportive strength, comforting assurance, sweet delight, productive promises, and encouragement. You will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in all spring shades of pink from strong burgundy to soft blush for the evening out on the town.

It’s time for BirdFest BirdQuest! Come play this fun free game, a Sequim Merchant Group Event sponsored by Sequim-Dungeness Chamber of Commerce, taking place in 20 of Sequim’s Businesses and promoting the Olympic Peninsula BirdFest. Find the beautiful bird sculptures, created by Jake Reichner’s Sequim High School ceramic’s class and match them to the business that you find them in. Game cards available at each of the participating merchants. The Grand Prize is a “Birds Eye View of Sequim” plane ride to Port Townsend and back with Emily Westcott, plus one year’s membership to the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society.

The 2016 National Avian Photographs exhibition awarded by the National Audubon Society is at the Sequim Civic Center at 152 West Cedar St. Sequim is the only location in the western states to host this amazing collection of photographs and meet the Grand Prize Winner, Bonnie Block, from Gig Harbor during from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Also, visit the Peeps Diorama Exhibit sponsored by Sequim’s City Arts Advisory Commission and vote for the “Peeples” Choice Award! The Peeps Diorama Exhibit is part of a national trend of art shows using the popular marshmallow candy to a create tableau or scene.

New Location! Find spring colors and fresh styles of artful up-cycled items at The Bag Ladies of Sequim at 161 W Washington Street. All of their creations are one of a kind items that are handmade. Each item has a unique combination of felting, hand dying, beading, embroidering and appliqueing. Several other artists’ works are for sale in their shop now facing Washington Street.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. presents “Just me! Plants and Animals” with featured 2 dimensional artist and art teacher Mary Franchini and 2 and 3 dimensional artist Barbara Neswald. Mary Franchini, contemporary artist, teacher and juror for regional shows, will include self-portraits. Barbara Neswald, a recent transplant to the Peninsula from Philadelphia, will showcase plants and animals. For years, Barbara has been known for her commitment to Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators.

Sequim’s Sunshine Café exhibits the art of Mary Leone Howard at 145 W Washington St. This exhibition includes a series of five, charcoal and graphite drawings of the Sequim Elk Herd. They were drawn as composites, from photos, taken by her husband and Mary, over a 10 year period, after they first arrived in Sequim in 2000.

The Museum and Arts Center features “Color and Texture: One Man’s Adventure in Quilt Making” an exhibition of Stan Green’s quilts at 175 W. Cedar St. The exhibition of quilts representing the progression of Stan’s styles over 16 plus years.

Painter Shirley Mercer art is on display at Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. and enjoy award winning artfully crafted wines with live music of duo Bread & Gravy featuring a dynamic vocalist/rhythm guitarist and a versatile pianist.

Olympic Theatre Arts presents the Discovery Bay Pirates Reunion at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Fans have missed Discovery Bay Pirates since this popular Peninsula group disbanded in 2015, ending its long history of Irish pub songs, sea shanties, and other folk music. During the Art Walk, this great quartet will reassemble for a reunion performance at Olympic Theater Arts in Sequim from 5:30-7:00. Admission is free. After the Pirates finish, starting at 7:30, Olympic Theatre Arts will stage its current production of “Over the River and Through the Woods”.

Lovely jewelry demonstrations with Paulette Hill and Gail Mclain at R&T Crystals and Beads at 158 E Bell St. that includes homemade cookies from Sequim Fresh Catering and a sale on creative goods at the store to inspire your creativity.

Lamb Farm Kitchen at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table, presents Jan Kepley and his photography. Jan Kepley has been working in the arts of music, writing, painting, natural sound recording, photography and food creation for most of his life.

At the Gallery at 5th Avenue presents “No Limits” exhibition with a personal motto of “You don’t know you can’t do it until you try it!” artist Carol Wilhelm experiments with new subjects, new techniques, and new styles. Carol has had a lifelong interest in all forms of art, enjoying a wide variety of arts and crafts mediums including stained glass, silk painting, rug-making, knitting, crochet, sewing, collage and driftwood sculpture to name a few. Painting with North Olympic Watercolorists, her primary focus is watercolor but the gallery will also display one-of-a-kind Nuno-felted scarves, wall panels and table runners.

March 3 Art Walk Sprouts Fresh and Artful Imagination with the GREEN Color Theme

An evening filled with green apparel and hints of spring sprouting, fresh starts, revitalized fortune, and supportive anticipation. March’s First Friday Art Walk Sequim reveals GREEN as the theme color that represents eternal good spirits, new ideas, wellness, generous support, nurturing natures, and youthful pursuits. "Slug Closeup" by Jan Kepley — “Slug Closeup” by Jan Kepley

Lamb Farm Kitchen at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table, presents Jan Kepley and his photography. Jan has been working in the arts of music, writing, painting, natural sound recording, photography and food creation for most of his life. He started photographing in 1977 with a $10 Kodak instamatic camera. His work includes macro floral, scenic and concept pieces. Jan and his wife, Kay, began a fine art photography business, Natural Light Photography, in 1985 that grew into wedding and portrait work. In 2016 Jan retired from doing commercial work and returned to his fine art roots. They now use his photographs for website design, presentation programming, videos, wall hung prints and a greeting card line.

Barbara Boerigter states, “Although schooled in classic sculpture, from the beginning I have been drawn to unusual materials and found objects, things used and then forgotten. The resulting works can be intriguing, or not.” Ryoko Toyama shares that, “Painting is the active response to my world, past and present. Inspiration comes from visible objects, music, and words. I like to create “emotional reality” as described by Skip Lawrence.”

The Museum and Arts Center features an exhibition of Reiko Yamaguchi Barclay’s art at 175 W. Cedar St. Her paintings and illustrations have received awards and recognition. She studied with many masters in painting, children’s illustration, sculpture. Her artwork have been displayed world-wide and this includes public murals. In 1991, she was designated one of the 75 best children’s illustrators.

Olympic Theatre Arts welcomes the clarinet quartet “Toot Sweet” performing 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The group will be decked out in Victorian attire and will pay tribute to the holidays with seasonal and Christmas music. “Toot Sweet” includes 3 Bb clarinets, Nancy Peterson, Mark Holman, and Jan Proebstel, plus a bass clarinet, Vicky Blakesley. According to ensemble member Blakesley the performance will feature lively music from various styles and across several eras. “A dance theme will run throughout the evening, so you will be able tap your toes to a Joplin rag or a Strauss polka. The North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival’s “Material Measurement – Magnitude, Meaning & Makers” fiber arts juried exhibition is at the Sequim Museum & Arts at 175 West Cedar St. is about vindicating the volume and importance of all fiber in its many forms while reflecting on textiles, tales, and talent through enlightenment, abundance, accumulation, and perception. Conspicuous consumption or considerate consequences, creators convey cloth’s transformation from meaningless mass into something that matters. Steve Anderson takes the stage at 5:30 p.m., at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N, Sequim Ave. Admission is free, concessions and beverage bar will be open. All are welcome to enjoy Anderson’s rendering of familiar standards and perhaps a few new tunes. Originally from Texas, he played for several years in San Diego’s Bluegrass Band scene and with other bands, both as lead vocalist, guitarist and mandolin player. His early influences included the rock bands of the 1970s like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Bad Company. Today he enjoys everything from Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Eric Clapton, and Elton John. Comfortable with a host of musical genres, from blues, country, folk and rock, he is in demand by local performing artists on the peninsula.

Thanks to altruistic, collaborative commitment, the First Friday Art Walk Sequim continues to grow and prosper with the encouragement of our community, businesses, educational and cultural institutions, and artists.

Look for luminarias or “festival lights” to connect the artful spots as the Art Walk celebrates its ten year anniversary this month of fostering creative and artistic ideals while supporting local businesses, including artists as enterprises, to create cultural vitality that is financially beneficial, intrinsically responsible, and improves the quality of life in our community. It is has always been free for businesses and artists of all media to participate and free to the public to enjoy.

October 7 Art Walk Color Theme is ORANGE! Orange is one of the brighter colors in fall as summer fades away. Orange is energizing, delightful, sweet, zesty, and inspires optimism and active participation. The warm hue of orange reminds us toasty fires, nesting and organizing, seasonal sweaters, friendship made out of admirable interests, delightful sweets, encouraging teachers and mentors. You will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in shades of orange or spicy colors as they enjoy an evening on the town with friends and family.

With a vocal style reminiscent of female singers during the 20s-60s, Judy Clark is an experienced and versatile entertainer. From big band to gospel, smooth jazz to country ballads, folk to Hawaiian, and much more, her voice and presence are perfect for a variety of settings.

Blue Whole Gallery’s featured artists in October are Carol Janda, a veteran painter, potter and teacher, and Katherine Loveland, award winning photographer, at 129 W Washington St.

Gail McLain will be doing fine jewelry demonstrations at R&T Crystals and Beads at 158 E Bell St. with a store wide sale too.

Starting at 6:00 PM, Sequim Branch of the North Olympic Library System at 630 N. Sequim Ave., celebrates the opening of a new “Art in the Library” exhibit featuring the black and white photographs of Ken Dvorak. And at 6:30pm, the Chuck Eastman/Rex Rice Quintet will perform tunes from the “Boys in the Boat” era, including big band jazz and swing.

A new Fiber Art Exhibit presented by the City Arts Advisory Commission is in the Sequim Civic Center lobby at 152 W Cedar St.

Local Yarn Shop at 213 E Washington St. hosts live music and motivating fiber arts demonstrations.

Cedarbrook Lavender Farm Shop in Orange and Fall colors

Get creative with lavender and meet a “budding” artist at Cedarbrook Lavender at 134 1/2 W Washington St.

Ready for some fine ukulele music? The Olympic Peninsula Ukulele Strummers (OPUS) take to the stage at 5:30 p.m. at Olympic Theater Arts at 414 N Sequim Ave. Formerly known as the Eden Valley Strummers, OPUS consists of anywhere from eight to 30 players, according to Dan King, the group’s spokesperson, adding there is also an accordion and mandolin player. The group began with only four players, but soon were entertaining folks at rehabilitation centers throughout the area. They also played for city events such as the Juan de Fuca Festival, the county fair, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and the Fourth of July parade.

Look for the luminaries lighting up Mia Bella at 130A N 3rd Ave. features fascinating art by Curposney Gadane of Enhanced Art containing surrealistic storytelling via collage. Mia Bella also hosts artists Pat Gordon, George Zien, Priscilla Patterson, Pam Kauffman, and gorgeous concrete garden features of hosts, rhubarb, and other exotic leaves bejeweled and painted by Joanie Schmoll.

Jan Kepley’s thoughtful photographs are on display at 1st Security Bank at 114 S Sequim Ave. artist’s reception from 4:30 to 6:00 PM with cards and calendars for sale.

Maia Waye’s Inspirational Art is on display at Sequim Spice and Tea 139 W Washington St.

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. hosts live music with Tony Flaggs Band that is a mixture of folk and rock with award winning artfully crafted wines with appetizing tidbits.

Show your support! Dungeness Kids has Dillon Liebert, a local teen, who will be busking at 990 E Washington St. He is a junior at Sequim High and a local singer/ songwriter that was raised right here in Sequim.

One of the newest venues to the Art Walk is The Bag Ladies of Sequim at 167 W Washington St. next to Emerald Grill with up-cycled items for a new purpose with an artful twist. They create colorful usable items from old wool blankets and garments that have otherwise seen their last days. All of their creations are one of a kind items that are handmade. Each item has a unique combination of felting, hand dying, beading, embroidering and appliqueing. Several other artists’ works are for sale in their shop.

Jan Kepley’s thoughtful photographs are on display at 1st Security Bank at 114 S Sequim Ave. through December and will have a reception until 6 PM on Friday.

Dennis Blair is performing at the Olympic Theater Arts at 414 N Sequim Ave. from 6 to 8 PM. Dennis Blair has been singing and performing with his twelve-string guitar in restaurants and clubs and at private parties and non-profit events since he was 13. Over the years his play list has featured rock, folk, country, and standards from the ‘40s through the ‘70s. “I have three criteria for playing a song,” he said. “I have to like it; I have to play and sing it well; and my listeners have to enjoy it.” Dennis had eight years of piano lessons as a kid, but was bored by them, so he taught himself to play the guitar and transferred all of that musical knowledge to the instrument he really likes. “The truth is that I don’t like to dance, so I entertain in self-defense,” he joked. Since Dennis and his wife, Sherry Wright, retired to the Peninsula in 2011, Dennis has performed mostly at local assisted living facilities, but a recent Christmas gift of studio time at Jeremy Cays Productions prompted him to make a demo CD and explore other venues like First Friday Art Walk.

The Sequim Museum and Arts Center at 175 W. Cedar St. will be hosting “The Art of Lavender”.

An art exhibit of “All Things Purple” will open in the lobby of the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar Street. The City Arts Advisory Commission reviewed 24 pieces of work from 12 artists before selecting 19 pieces to be included in the show. The exhibit includes works in watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, photography, and metal. The artists represented are Barb Boerigter, Sharon Delabarre, Karen Gates-Kilpatrick, Pat Gordon, Terri Jones, Judy Larimore, John McBride, Kimberly McBride, Betty Oppenheimer, Sandy Placek, Patty Waite, and George Zien.

Olympic Theatre Arts at 414 N. Sequim Ave. will experiment with an unusual combination of talents for its OFF Stage offering (OTA First Friday), combining ballet and comedy on Friday, July 1, during Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk. The Improv troupe “Tweaking Reality” will return for a riotous audience participation performance to be presented between two short recital pieces performed by the company principals of Sequim Ballet. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m., with the ballet beginning at 5:30 p.m., Improv 6:00–6:30 p.m., and a ballet encore at 6:30 p.m. There will be no charge for attendance. Refreshments, including beer, wine, and light snacks will be available for purchase.

Dancers Kate D’Amico, Amara Sayer, Eleanor Byren, Ryan Andrews, Saige Turner and Ava Rich will perform two dances from the original choreography of Cinderella by Sequim Ballet Mistress, Laurel Herrera. Cinderella premiered on the OTA stage last spring, eliciting accolades from full-house audiences. “This is another chance for these serious dancers to perform,” said Herrera. “I like for them to have as many opportunities to dance in front of an audience as possible. This performance bridges the gap between our opening of Cinderella and our premiere of The Nutcracker, which we plan to stage at OTA this winter.”

Appearing on stage following the first short ballet performance will be OTA’s popular Improv troupe, “Tweaking Reality.” The antics will abound for a half hour and feature Dave McInnes, Olivia Shea, Danny Willis and Pamela Ziemann. “Improv is such a great way to sharpen your acting skills while having some serious fun,” explained Danny Willis. “This is always a fun night for us at OTA,” remarked Carol Willis, OTA general manager. “And we would like to see the program grow to become a permanent workshop at OTA, allowing us to include more people and possibly offer some professional guidance.”

The Sequim Irrigation Festival’s “where water is wealth” inspires the AQUA color theme celebrating cultivation and culture during the May 6 Sequim Art Walk. The color aqua expresses responsible, sustainable elements of cool fresh water, abundant salty seas, renewing rain, and sunny skies. Art and music inspired by our natural resources, Steampunk creativity, positive partnerships, and revolutionary ideas are included in the May First Friday Art Walk Sequim. Sounds of our cultivating irrigation ditches are blended with guitar and music boxes for “Propagation” performance and our future forward-thinking ideas are highlighted at the Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. Besides wearing the color theme of Aqua, everyone is encouraged to dress up in amusing and whimsical outfits, including Steampunk, for the Irrigation Festival’s “Crazy Days”!

Music starts at 6 p.m. at the Sequim Civic Center with ‘Propagation’ by Alan B. Brock-Richmond an experimental improvisational ambient drone noise concert developed to premiere in celebration of the 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival. Inspired by early sound pioneers, Futurist ideals and aesthetics such as The Art of Noises manifesto and Intonarumori instruments of Luigi Russolo, and novelty music boxes of the Victorian Era, this work is an exploration of mechanical and electronic sound looping with emphasis on modulating tones, complex complimentary and contrasting harmonics, nuanced resonances, and textured reverberation, centered around a sculptural chambered music box instrument with original composition, electric guitar with bows, effects, and loop pedals, and field recordings including local irrigation canals and agricultural machinery. audioeins.com

Throughout the town, artwork created by our local students for the Irrigation Festival Button Contest will be on display at several Sequim Merchants. The Olympic Lavender Company at 120 W Washington St. is showcasing 2016 Irrigation Button Winner Raquel and their Steampunk themed window dressing.

Jake Reichner will play from 5:30-7:30 p.m.at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Reichner grew up in Sequim and has been playing guitar and writing his own music since high school. According to Reichner, his work is inspired by everyday life. It is reflective and introspective and blends both rhythmic and percussive songs with melodic ballads. Free to the public.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. presents “Visual Symphony” with featured artists abstract painter Bridget Baker and photographer Karen Rozbicki Stringer. Bridget and Karen create a visual symphony from what they see, experience, imagine, and their feelings. Their art will take viewers to the world of fine art filled with joy.

Hart’s Fine Books at 161 W Washington St. hosts Tom Darter, founding editor of Keyboard Magazine, who will be playing piano and author Russell Cahill book signing. Tom started playing piano at the age of five. He has played keyboards on numerous Jerry Goldsmith film scores, won several composition awards, and arranged two albums for the Kronos Quartet. He has played piano or keyboards in rock bands, jazz groups, chamber ensembles, electronic music groups, and symphony orchestras. He has also taught music theory and composition at Roosevelt University in Chicago (where he also conducted the school’s Contemporary Music Ensemble), and electronic studio techniques at the University of Southern California. Russell Cahill served as a National Park Ranger in the 60s and 70s and was later Director of Alaska’s and California’s State Park Systems. He came to Washington in 1980 to serve as Supervisor of Natural Resources for Washington DNR and has been here ever since. He’ll be signing his book “KOLEA: A Story of Hawai’i and Beyond” and chatting about a memoir due out in the fall.

The entire collection will be together for the first time on April 15th for a preview and reception in Sunland.

An evening filled with green apparel and hints of spring sprouting, supportive anticipation, revitalized luck, and fresh starts. March’s First Friday Art Walk Sequim reveals GREEN as the theme color that represents youthful spirits, generous support, new ideas, wellness, nurturing natures, and young at heart pursuits. You will find works of art and folks supporting the option to decorate and dress in all shades of green for the evening out on the town.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. presents guest artist Mike McCollum, nationally recognized artist and art educator. Artist statement: “This exhibit involves recent wood and resin works consisting of large totems and a series of pyramids. The totems are comprised of different panels of drawings and/or abstract color “paintings.” Several of the totems are lit from inside. The pyramids range in size from desktop to large ones that are best viewed on the floor. A series of tables that have wood and colored resin designed tops will also be on display. This current work demands something from the viewer. The pieces do not answer any questions, they only ask them.” Mike was born in Hoquiam, WA but developed many of his artistic sensibilities from the San Francisco Bay Area and was awarded an individual artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980.

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. has Twisted Roots in the house performing a mixture of tunes from 60s & 70s. Blues, rock, and Americana along with fresh art with award winning artfully crafted wines with appetizing tidbits.

Starting at 6:00 PM, Sequim Branch of the North Olympic Library System at 630 N. Sequim Ave., enjoy a storytelling program by featured artist Richard Jesse Watson and music by Bread and Gravy. Join the artist for an interactive dance of story, art and books with music while he pick ideas from the audience, turn them into quick drawings and create a story together. Bread and Gravy is the husband and wife duo of Stephanie and Jess Doenges. Based on the Olympic Peninsula, their music alternates between powerful rock and soulful blues to smooth bluegrass and good old fashioned Americana. Dynamically diverse and intricately woven, their musical poetry captures the rarest of dichotomies: raw and refined.
